Los Angeles Security Services: California License Requirements

American Security Force is dedicated to ensuring all our customers in Los Angeles security services that meet their very unique needs. To that end, we first take great pains to ensure that each of our guards meets the criteria outlined by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, which licenses and regulates contract security guards.

Armed Security Guard

A contract security guard is defined by the bureau as any individual who is employed by a licensed private patrol security business. In order to become a licensed guard and provide security services, Los Angeles guards at American Security Force must be 18 or older and must undergo 40 hours of security training, to be administered by a licensed training facility. (Some of this training must be completed before assignment to a post, and all must be completed within 6 months of registration.)

Until 2004, only 3 hours of training was required to work as a guard in security services (Los Angeles based American Security Forces, however, has always provided training above and beyond state requirements). Now, training includes 8 hours of Power to Arrest training before application can even made to the state. Once training and an examination are passed, the candidate must undergo 16 hours of security guard training within 30 days of registration, and an additional 16 hours of training within 6 months. Beginning in 2005, an additional 8 hours of annual continuing education was added to the requirements. In addition to state-mandated training, American Security Force also provides its officers with specialized, customer-specific training so that they can know and react to your specific security needs.

Finally, Los Angeles security services employees at American Security Force must undergo a thorough criminal background check from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the California Department of Justice (DOJ), as well as an internal background check by American Security Force. Registration remains active for 2 years from the day of issuance.
